Poulos Named Executive Director,
Office of Technology Commercialization at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, MD. . . James A. Poulos, III, was recently named the executive director of the Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) at the University of Maryland, College Park.

"We are delighted that Jim Poulos has agreed to assume this very important position for the University of Maryland," said Dr. William Destler, vice president for research and dean of the graduate school. "We are all looking forward to a significant expansion in the scope of activities of the Office of Technology Commercialization under his leadership."

Poulos has served as acting executive director of OTC since June 1999 and was the associate director for technology management since March 1998. Prior to OTC, Poulos was an intellectual property attorney and partner at law firms in Virginia and Washington, D.C. Poulos received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of Maryland in 1979 and graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1984.

Since June 1999, OTC has evaluated and promoted more than 125 technologies that were developed at the university and licensed base technologies to five new University of Maryland start-up companies.

The Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) at the University of Maryland was established in 1986 to facilitate the transfer of life, information and physical science inventions developed at the university to business and industry. In the past 13 years, OTC has recorded more than 930 technologies, secured more than 135 patents and executed more than 450 license agreements, generating more than $17 million in technology transfer income. In addition, 18 high-tech start-up companies have been formed based on technologies developed at the university.
