Poulos
Named Executive Director,
Office of Technology Commercialization at Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, MD. . . James A. Poulos, III, was recently named the
executive director of the Office of Technology Commercialization
(OTC) at the University of Maryland, College Park.
"We are delighted that Jim Poulos has agreed to assume this very
important position for the University of Maryland," said Dr. William
Destler, vice president for research and dean of the graduate school.
"We are all looking forward to a significant expansion in the scope
of activities of the Office of Technology Commercialization under
his leadership."
Poulos has served as acting executive director of OTC since June
1999 and was the associate director for technology management since
March 1998. Prior to OTC, Poulos was an intellectual property attorney
and partner at law firms in Virginia and Washington, D.C. Poulos
received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University
of Maryland in 1979 and graduated from the University of Baltimore
School of Law in 1984.
Since June 1999, OTC has evaluated and promoted more than 125 technologies
that were developed at the university and licensed base technologies
to five new University of Maryland start-up companies.
The Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) at the University
of Maryland was established in 1986 to facilitate the transfer of
life, information and physical science inventions developed at the
university to business and industry. In the past 13 years, OTC has
recorded more than 930 technologies, secured more than 135 patents
and executed more than 450 license agreements, generating more than
$17 million in technology transfer income. In addition, 18 high-tech
start-up companies have been formed based on technologies developed
at the university.
