University of Maryland Honors
Cutting-Edge Inventions; Celebrates
Research and Technology Transfer

WHAT: The three top University of Maryland inventions for 2000 will be announced by the university's Office of Technology Commercialization at its 14th Annual Invention of the Year Reception. The three winning inventions are among more than 100 cutting-edge inventions being honored at the ceremony. The winners--one each from the areas of information, life and physical science--are selected by an independent panel on the basis of creativity, novelty and potential overall benefit to society.

Past winners that are now achieving commercial success include the scanning Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) microscope invented in 1992 by associate professor of physics Fred Wellstood. The scanning SQUID microscope has been further developed and is being marketed by Neocera, Inc., as a failure-analysis tool for the semiconductor industry. Last September, the company's MAGMA-C1 scanning SQUID microscope was named one of the year's 100 most technologically significant new products by R&D Magazine. Founded by university professor T. "Venky" Venkatesan, Neocera has been recognized as one of the fastest growing firms in the mid-Atlantic region and is included in the National Fast 500.

WHO: William W. Destler, University of Maryland's vice president of research and dean of the Graduate School, will present plaques and $500 in award money to the inventors of the top three technologies.

WHY: In the last 14 years, the Office of Technology Commercialization has managed more than 1000 technologies, secured more than 150 patents and executed more than 450 license agreements, generating more than $17 million in technology transfer income to the university. In addition, 22 high-tech start-up companies have been formed based on technologies developed at the university.
